Autism Spectrum Disorder refers to a developmental disability that is often caused due to differences in brain development. Multiple cases of ASD show that individuals suffering from this condition demonstrate different symptoms and effects in life. However, it is majorly referred to as the developmental disorder that affects how people interact with each other, their communication skills, behavior, and cognitive skills.

Autism can be diagnosed at any stage of life; however, it generally appears in the first two years of developmental stages. As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5, which is a guide created by the American Psychiatric Association, people suffering from ASD face:

• Severe challenges with interaction and social communication
• Difficulty with their average ability to function in work, school, and other dimensions of life
• Restricted interactions, interests along with repetitive behaviors

There is a specific reason as to why autism is often referred to as the “spectrum” disorder. It is done so to highlight the fact that there are considerable variations in the type as well as the severity of autistic symptoms in ASD children and adults.

There is no specific restriction to the occurrence of this condition in people. Mostly children, but people of all races, genders, economic backgrounds, and ethnicities can be diagnosed with this condition.

Is it a lifelong disorder? Yes, in most cases, it is a lifelong condition that can be treated with appropriate services and medications. Unfortunately, a single remedy might not be available to treat this condition. Still, regular intake of specific medicines, treatments, and services can improve the symptoms and overall well-being of people with ASD.
